What We Do - Explanation of Service
"Doctor" means teacher. Therefore, I will explain some of the reasons patients seek relief under my care. "Chiropractic" ... it's an odd word, isn't it? "Chiros" = hands; "Practik" = to practice. "Chiropractic" simply means "to practice with the hands". Chiropractic is a very logical type of health care for people who realize their pain is not present due to a lack of pills in their bloodstream and for those who want to avoid surgery unless absolutely necessary. The simple fact of the headache/migraine/neck/shoulder/arm/back/hip & leg pain world is most of these pains can be helped thru my special technique which consists of deep tissue massage and myofascial release (always to patient tolerance, of course) followed with specific chiropractic adjustments. These specific adjustments re-align the joints into a more balanced/centered position which they may have come out of. This, in turn, is designed to take pressure off your nerves which may be causing your symptoms (pain/stiffness) to begin with. The overwhelming majority of the 1000's of patients I have helped since receiving my Doctorate of Chiropractic in 1993 from Palmer College of Chiropractic have fit in this musculo/skeletal/nervous dysfunction sceneario. If a patient is beyond my scope of practice they will be referred to another physician or specialist.
The basic premise of chirorpactic care: structure is 100% related to function. Much like a bridge, an engine or a birds wing ... if the structure is wrong then the function starts to become symptomatic and begins to deteriorate. Your muscles, tendons and ligaments attach to your bones and joint capsules and nerves run throughout these tissues. When your bones or joints come out of alignment (as a result of different types of stresses) then the pressure on these tissues start symptoms. Life is made up of choices. Either one can live with the resulting pain realizing the area may deteriorate furthur (like a cavity in a tooth) or they can call Dr. Tom at 505.508.6025 and start the process of getting better and becoming healthier.
My education combined with over 22+ years of clinical experience has helped me understand the patients perspective: "What is it? Something's not right! I can't stand this any longer! This is killing me! I think it came on while I was sleeping". The patient wants to get back to feeling good ASAP! There is a simple adage: "If it's not right - it's wrong". That is where Dr. Tom comes in. Having an excellent understanding of what causes pain in the human body and correcting the CAUSE of what is creating the pain is my passion. It is important to understand that I do not work on a patients pain - I work on the CAUSE of their pain. In essence, correcting the problem not just the symptom. Swallowing pain pills time and time again is akin to placing a piece of black tape over the red "check engine" light on ones dash board. The red light is just a symptom there is something not right under the hood. The smart choice is to fix the problem causing the symptom.
Patients must realize ... some problems are quick and easy to correct. If a problem is serious or long standing it will take time and effort to correct. In order to relax the ligament, muscle and tendon spasms and re-train the joints to stay in proper alignment may take repeated adjustments - akin to going to the gym in order to get fit. No physician, physical therapist or massage therapist has a magic wand to wave over the patient and state, "you're healed" in one visit (although that is what every patient on the planet would like)! There is no magic pill. Healthcare is a journey - not a destination.
Some people ask, "If I go to the chiropractor, do I have to keep going back?" The answer is, "NO". A patient doesn't have to do anything they don't want to do. The simple fact of the matter is that once a person sees how good they can feel and understands how much healthier they can feel overall with pressures off their nervous system - they don't ever want to go back to that painful condition. At that point patients simply call my office and come in for a "tune-up" adjustment so they can remain feeling & being healthy!
